Job Description:

Within the framework of the New Community Corporation’s Early Learning Centers’ Program’s purpose and philosophy, the Abbott Teacher is responsible to provide age-appropriate educational programming daily to the assigned classrooms and provide a teaching model; observing and contributing to the evaluation of the children.

Working within the structure of the New Community Corporation and the Newark School District to carry out the functions, policies, and practices as established by the governing boards. While maintaining supportive and consistent team teaching between self and Teacher Assistant to ensure quality educational programming on a daily basis.

  • Keeping the governing boards informed of any major educational problems affecting the classrooms either internally or externally imposed.
  • Planning for smooth transitions of children’s entrance and withdrawal from center classrooms.
  • Ordering new educational materials and supplies under the direction of the governing boards.
  • Maintaining and updating children’s files with necessary information in order for files to be completed and accurate.
  • Maintaining current records of educational supplies and equipment and keeping accurate inventory and records to ensure quality.
  • Record any unusual incidents involving the children and ensuring that parents are informed of them.
  • Maintain the appropriate staff / child ratio during daily indoor activities, playground and nap time.
  • Maintaining supportive working relationships with parents/guardians to enhance a warm exchange between program personnel and parents/guardians.
  • Keeping educational equipment and materials accessible and good condition so as to encourage maximum use for teaching.
  • Supporting good communication between parents, self and the center.
  • Adhering to all DYFS Licensing Requirements as required by law.
  • Attending all ongoing educational meetings to ensure coordination between programs component and continuous development of integrated curriculum.
  • Each staff member shall complete 10 hours of continuing staff development each year in the following: child growth and development, positive guidance and discipline and health and safety procedures.
  • Record students’ attendance and meal service daily.
  • Interact with the children in a positive, warm nurturing way; maintain a sense of humor.
  • Allow children to make choice and be flexible.
  • Pay attention to the children’s health, safety and general welfare.
  • Use songs, games, and teaching tools to prepare children for transition time such as mealtime, nap time, circle time, activities, going outside, bathroom, hand washing, departure etc. Use every opportunity to remind children of rules.

 

Experience and Skills:

  • A basic understanding of Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Methodology for three and four year old children.
  • Implement the Creative Curriculum in a Pre-K classroom of three and four year old students.
  • Pre-3 certification
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field.
